Fake Chinese Apple Store!

According to the blog BirdAbroad (via ifoAppleStore), several counterfeit Apple stores have popped up in Kunming, China. One such location featured a winding staircase and employees in t-shirts with Apple logos and name tags.

“The name tags around the necks of the friendly salespeople didn’t actually have names on them – just an Apple logo and the anonymous designation “Staff,”” the report read.

The author called the store “the best ripoff store” she had ever seen, though there were several giveaways, such as the poor quality of the staircase and a sub-par paint job. Also, the stores do not appear to have upgraded to Apple’s Retail 2.0 layout that uses iPads as “smart signs.”

According to her, the employees at the store “all genuinely think they work for Apple.” After store security guards and employees prohibited her from taking photos, the author hinted that she and her husband were “two American Apple employees visiting China and checking out the local stores” and were then allowed to photograph the store.

Though Apple products are frequently counterfeited in China, it is rare that copyists will pay enough attention to detail to so closely copy the company’s retail store and business model.

The Cupertino, Calif., iPhone maker revealed on Tuesday that sales in Greater China $3.8 billion in the June quarter, a whopping six-fold increase from a year ago. Apple’s four official retail stores in mainland China are the company’s highest traffic and highest grossing locations.

The company announced plans last February to open 25 retail stores in China over the next couple years in order to keep up with growing demand in the world’s most populous nation. Hong Kong will receive its first Apple Store during the September quarter, while two locations in Chengdu are rumored to be in the works.

Apple plans to build 30 new retail locations during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011. The company’s retail business brought in a total of $3.5 billion in revenues last quarter.

The queue for the iPhone 5 has started!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to the next iPhone as much as the next guy but this might be a little extreme. The UK’s Metro Online is reporting that somebody is already in line for the iPhone 5.

Even though the device isn’t expected for another 1-2 months, Rob Shoesmith has already set up camp outside a London Apple Store in anticipation of the new gadget. No he’s not crazy, this is actually all part of his plan…Shoesmith is a 29 year-old marketing executive from Coventry, just north of London. He currently handles public relations for the iOS app development firm, MEDL Mobile. The PR expert decided a few months ago that he was going to start camping out well ahead of schedule.

“I will be camping out on the streets of London for the launch of the iPhone 5 in a marketing and pr experiment.”

Shoesmith’s iPhone 5 Experiment has not only garnered a lot of attention, it’s also gotten him a lot of free stuff. In exchange for advertisement on his popular blog, companies have been giving him free food, gadgets, and other things to help him survive the urban camp-out.

As of this writing, Shoesmith has already acquired $1100 worth of outdoor gear, clothing, and loads of free food and gadgets. He has made it clear however, that he plans to donate any leftover goods to charity after the experiment is over.

While I’m digging the fact that he gets to live in relative luxury for free, I can’t imagine being in a tent that long. With rumors pegging the iPhone 5 to drop as late as October, it could be a long couple of months for Rob Shoesmith.

What do you think? Will he make it?

App Store Raise Minimum Prices from 59p to 69p!

The minimum price for Apple’s iPhone and iPad apps has just risen in the UK, now overreaching the US price.

The success of Apple’s App Store has largely been because of a huge amount of free and cheap software. Developers and users alike have largely jumped on board with the UK minimum price of £0.59p, which is why it seems odd that Apple has now decided to increase that minimum price.

As of this very minute, the minimum price of apps on the App Store has risen to 69p in the UK – 10p more than it has been prior. There are still tens of thousands of free apps available to download, but it’s this minimum price point that may spark an app riot.

Frustratingly, this price point works out at around $1.11, meaning that users in the UK are now paying more for apps than the $0.99 minimum. There’s been no word from Apple as to why this is, but the company will still only be taking a 30 per cent share of app revenue, which may work out as good news for developers – assuming users get on board with the new price point.

Were you happy with 59p apps? Or do you only download free ones? Let us know your thoughts
